Wood Flooring for a Lifetime. Forests Forever. Leaf

NonWoodNon-Wood

This icon identifies flooring products made from plant materials that are wood-like but are not wood per se. These include bamboo, cork, and palm.

The bamboo cane that provides the raw material for our bamboo flooring is not a tree; botanically, it is actually in the grass family. For more information on bamboo, click here.

Bamboo qualifies for a Non-Wood Eco Icon and a Rapidly Renewable (6 year) Eco Icon.

Cork flooring comes from cork trees, but it is made from bark of the tree, not the wood. Cork, known primarily for its use as wine bottle stoppers, comes from the bark of the cork oak which grows in the sunny south of Portugal, Spain, and North Africa (Portugal accounts for more than 50% of the world's total cork production). Cork bark can be 'stripped' off allowing new bark to regrow in its place, making every tree an ongoing renewable source of raw material. Cork can be harvested every nine years for about 200 years. A tree that is 80 years old can produce 200 kilos of cork every nine years. For more information on cork, click here.

Cork qualifies for a Non-Wood Eco Icon and a Rapidly Renewable (9 year) Eco Icon.

Palm flooring is made from palm trees, which is not technically wood either. Palms are in a different botanical family from other trees, and are made up of a fibrous material that resembles wood but is not. Our palm flooring comes from coconut palm plantations which are abundant around the world. Palms produce nuts for up to 80 years, then as the palms age and become non-producing, they are removed and replanted with young palms, offering a large, ongoing supply of raw material. For more information on palm flooring, click here.

Palm qualifies for a Non-Wood Eco Icon, a Plantation Icon, and a Reclaimed Post Agricultural Icon.
